Nearly e very semester, UPD
receives reports of individuals on campus
selling magazine
subscriptions. Often the seller will say
that he/she is trying to earn “points” toward
an award (i.e., trip to Europe, money for
their school, etc.). The customer fills
out a subscription form, gives the seller
money and never hears from the seller again.
More often than not, the customer, now
a victim, never sees their money again
nor does he/she receive any magazines.
If the seller has given the customer a
telephone number, it will most likely be
disconnected or belong to someone who has
nothing to do with the magazine company.
Everyone who sells anything on SJSU property
must obtain permission to sell and must
be registered with Office of Non-Academic
Scheduling (located in the Student Union).
Anyone who sells anything on campus that
is not registered is breaking the law (Education
Code §89031, Presidential Directive
89-01) and is subject to arrest. This law
is in place to protect the University and
our campus community.
Oftentimes, individuals selling magazine subscriptions on campus do not have
permission to sell on SJSU property.
If you suspect that a vendor on SJSU property
is suspicious, contact the University Police
immediately at 924-2222 or via a blue light
telephone. A University Police Officer
will be dispatched to check the person
out. |
