Fire
Safety in your Home or Residence Hall Room
- Avoid the use of hot
plates and cooking appliances in residence
hall rooms.
- Do not overload electrical
outlets.
- Avoid using extension
cords when possible.
- Place candles in
secure fire-proof holders and never leave
a candle burning unattended (the burning
of candles is prohibited in SJSU buildings).
- Never smoke in bed
(smoking is prohibited in SJSU buildings).
- Keep exits and hallways
clear of obstructions.
- Leave the fire area
as quickly and safely as possible.

- Leave the fire area
as quickly and safely as possible.
- Before opening any
door, use the back of your hand to see
if it is hot – if the door is hot
DO NOT OPEN IT! Stuff towels or clothing
beneath the door to prevent smoke from
coming in.
- Open a window.
- If the door is not
hot, open it SLOWLY and look into the
hallway for signs of smoke or fire before
leaving the safety of your room.
- If possible, carry
a wet towel or blanket to protect you.
Remember to stay low if there is smoke
in the air.
- Use the stairs to
leave the building – never use the
elevator in the event of a fire!
- When out of
danger, activate the nearest alarm and/or
call 911.
