About the Investigations Unit
The
Investigations and Crime Prevention Unit
serves the San José State University
Community in several ways. The Unit is responsible
for conducting investigations into all criminal
cases which occur within the jurisdiction
of the University Police Department. This
includes follow-up investigations of crimes
reported to patrol officers and special
investigations reported directly to the
Unit. Additionally, Detectives handle pre-employment
background checks for University Police
Department employees, internal investigations
of citizen complaints and registration of
sex offenders who either work at or attend
SJSU. Other services provided by the Unit
include: dignitary protection; subpoena
service; and fugitive apprehension. In addition,
Detectives may be called upon to conduct
civil investigations on behalf of the University.
The Detectives receive several hundred
hours of specialized training in such
areas as
sexual assault, internal affairs, computer
crime, burglary and theft, evidence collection,
interview and interrogation, and background
investigation. The members of the Unit
participate
in the California Commission on Peace Officer
Standards and Training Robert Presley
Institute
of Criminal Investigations certification
process.
Detectives also are
responsible for assisting other Federal,
State and local law enforcement agencies
whose own investigations involve University
property or personnel. The Detectives work
closely with other investigators through
participation in such organizations as the
California Sexual Assault Investigators'
Association, the Santa Clara Valley Intelligence
Unit, the California Narcotics Officers'
Association and the High-Tech Crime Investigators'
Association. Detectives may also be temporarily
assigned to multi-jurisdictional task forces
such as the Santa Clara County Specialized
Enforcement Team (SCCSET).
The Investigation and
Crime Prevention Unit is also responsible
for submitting criminal cases to the Office
of the District Attorney of Santa Clara
County and filing issued complaints with
the Superior Court.
The COPPS Coordinator
position is a part-time position responsible
for coordinating and documenting all the
department community policing efforts, crime
prevention programs, the department web site, and researching funding
sources from federal, state and other entities.
Crime Prevention Programs
include: The Annual Safety Fair which
brings many Public Safety and Service Agencies
to SJSU offering Faculty, Staff and Students
alike information on what services are available
in Santa Clara County; Safety Presentations
to Staff and Students.
The Court Liaison(s)
are student assistants charged with filing
and tracking all cases entered into the
Automated Records Management System (ARMS);
and ensuring that all UPD officers are kept
apprised of pending court dates. |
